Business, Management & Marketing

About this route

The International Year One in Business, Management & Marketing will develop your subject knowledge and English language skills, whilst preparing you to join the second year of your chosen undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield’s Business School.

Just like the first year of an undergraduate degree, the International Year One is a two-semester programme with a choice of modules. You will have the additional benefit of smaller class sizes and more support to help you develop your academic knowledge, study skills and language abilities to prepare you for your degree.

You will study several modules, which deliver specialised academic content as you would expect during an undergraduate degree, depending on your chosen area of study.

Why study Business, Management & Marketing?

Please note that you are expected to attend 100% of your classes at the International Study Centre or you are at risk of losing your Student visa.

Markets and Marketing

Topics in the Markets and Marketing module provide aspiring business degree undergraduates with a clear understanding of how this important, and highly expensive, department uses business models to help companies become the organisation of choice for the consumer. The module will deepen students’ understanding of both the theory and practice of the Marketing function. Students will develop their understanding of its range of its activities, well beyond simple advertising, and will also learn more about the tactics used to influence consumers’ decisions to buy particular brands and/or products.

Legal Environment

The purpose of the Legal Environment module is to introduce students to key areas of the legal aspects of business, with a particular emphasis on the formation and operation of business contracts. Relevant case law examples will be covered and students will also consider when liability in contract arises, the nature of obligations on both sides and the availability of remedies when a contract is not fulfilled. Students will develop their ability to produce high quality, evidenced and referenced written work, which meets the very specific demands of academic work at University level.

Academic English Skills

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at university. Our Academic English programme is validated by UK ENIC, the UK government agency responsible for providing information and expert opinion on qualifications and skills worldwide.

You will develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related academic skills, including the processes of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will also develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language required to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence in an academic context.

Alongside your classes, your studies will be supported by an online learning platform, providing you with a range of tasks and activities specifically designed to develop and extend your language and academic skills outside the classroom and to give you more control over your own learning.

Organisational Behaviour

The Organisational Behaviour module develops students’ ability to understand and analyse business structures, operations and management, along with the factors which motivate the people who work in these organisations. This module applies business theory to real organisational settings in such a way as to suggest possible courses of management actions. Students will build the confidence to explain how organisational performance can be improved through better use of its key resource: its people. Group work, and presentations, along with the written coursework requirement will all help prepare students to progress successfully to their degree course.

"Rather than going directly to the University, study a foundation and make a base. When you are making a home, you start with the base. The International Year One is a base. Students should comply with it, so they can have a great knowledge of what they're going to learn in the University later on."
