Hear the UK's commitment to welcoming international students
Bridget Phillipson, the UK’s Secretary of State for Education, shares her admiration and warm welcome for international students!
The International Year One is an intensive programme tailored for international students that is equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree. By studying the programme, you will be ensuring you have the English language and academic skills and knowledge required to smoothly transition to UK higher education. Successful completion of the programme with the required grades allows you to progress to the second year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield, meaning you will graduate in the standard three years.
Studying an International Year One programme is an excellent way to start your undergraduate degree. The programme will ensure you have the skills and knowledge required to progress to the second year of your degree. Below are six benefits of studying an International Year One programme:
The UK is home to many different cultures and offers a welcoming experience for international students. This means you will be living alongside and studying with people from different cultures and backgrounds, expanding your worldview and introducing you to new experiences.
Having time to adjust to a new education system is one of the biggest benefits of the International Year One programme. You will be studying in university-style classes, but with the benefit of extra guidance and support from your tutors.
While studying an International Year One programme, you will receive expert academic support designed to help international students transition into UK higher education. During the programme, you will develop important skills, including how to do research, how to write essays, time management and organisation.
The International Year One programme is taught at the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre. Here you will find a team of staff who are experts in supporting international students with their studies and adjusting to life in a new country.
Class sizes at the International Study Centre are much smaller than those at the university. This means you will receive personalised support both in and out of the classroom.
Save time and smoothly progress to the University of Huddersfield with a combined visa, covering your studies at both the International Study Centre and the University. Having a combined visa means you won’t need to return home to apply for a new visa between your International Year One and joining the second year of your undergraduate degree. The visa also gives you the opportunity to work up to 20 hours per week, giving you valuable work experience and boosting your graduate job prospects.
Education systems differ around the world. By choosing the International Year One, you will give yourself time to adjust to a new way of learning. The programme also gives you time to explore university life and feel comfortable in your new surroundings.
During the programme, you will be equipped with the academic abilities and language proficiency needed to study at university level, ensuring you are ready for the second year of your undergraduate degree at the University of Huddersfield.
If you want to study an International Year One in the UK, look no further than the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre. There are many reasons why studying an International Year One in the UK is a great idea. Some of the top reasons are:
The International Year One and International Foundation Year are both one-year courses in the UK for international students. The difference between them is the level of study. The International Year One programme is typically for students who are ready to study the first year of their undergraduate degree but would benefit from extra academic and English language support. Successful completion of the International Year One, with the required grades, allows students to join the second year of their undergraduate degree at their chosen university.
The International Foundation Year is perfect for international students who do not meet the academic qualifications to study the intensive International Year One programme, but who wish to progress to the first year of an undergraduate degree. It is tailored to students that are looking to improve their academic knowledge and English language skills to get the most out of their university studies. Successful completion of the programme, with the required grades, allows students to join the first year of their undergraduate degree at their chosen university.
International Year One entry requirements include academic background and English language skills* and the student must be over the age of 17. There are also country-specific requirements. Read more on entry requirements.

“I was recommended to study through the International Study Centre and I made a good choice by doing so. You don't feel alone because there are so many people coming from different countries and I met a lot of people from my own country, so I felt a bit at home as well.”

"When I travelled here, the first two days I was kind of blindfolded and then gradually when I started attending classes at the International Study Centre, the teachers gave me a daily dose of motivation. I felt like they really wanted to help me to get on my second year in the University. It helped me not just academically, but also with my personal situation as well.
All that preparation from the International Study Centre, it really helped me and guided me and I felt like I wasn't unprepared for it at all compared with when I first arrived in the UK. I feel like I'm more capable."
