The International Foundation Year in Business and Law, Hospitality and Tourism, Management, Marketing or Transport and Logistics will prepare you for a degree in fields such as Accounting, Finance and Marketing.
You will study core modules, which are general skills subjects, and route modules, which are specific and important for your academic development.
Academic English Skills aims to provide you with thorough training in the language and related academic skills, enabling you to best achieve your academic potential at University. These skills include the processes of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will also develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language required to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence in an academic context.
In this module you will focus on basic topics and methods in Numerical Techniques, Algebra, Calculus, Statistics and Probability with a view to strengthening your background knowledge and improving your skills in handling and presenting data.
Personal, Learning and Critical Thinking Skills are essential skills for work and learning, and will prepare you to confidently enter university and later working life. The six groups of skills are:
This module is assessed by a project that focuses on your chosen degree subject and is an essential component of the International Foundation Year Programme.
This module gives you the opportunity to consider some of the external influences that affect businesses and other organisations. By applying your learning to real business scenarios you will learn that businesses rarely have any control over these influences. You will also analyse how a business or industry has responded to competitive influences.
You will develop an understanding of how businesses develop and adapt in a changing economic and business climate. You will be able to demonstrate that you can apply knowledge of the different forms of ownership and control to a specific business context and explain the reasons for change. You will also understand the role of different stakeholders and their competing, and changing objectives. You will be able to explain the reasons for reasons for growth or decline of industrial sectors and be able to analyse location decisions, including some international comparisons.
In this module you will develop knowledge, understanding and skills of how business organisations are affected by the law. You will explore the main types of legislation and consider how business activities are constrained by relevant legislation. You will also demonstrate the ability to interpret summary financial information and make judgements about business performance, including profit and loss statements, cash flow forecasts and balance sheets.
Academic: Good high school graduation grades or equivalent
English language: Academic IELTS for UKVI 4.5 (minimum of 4.0 in writing), or equivalent*
Age on entry: 17+ (in the September or October of the academic year you begin your course at the International Study Centre)
