Modules

To ensure you will successfully progress to your postgraduate degree, the Pre-Master’s programme has a range of modules carefully selected to develop your skills and knowledge. You are expected to attend 100% of your classes at the International Study Centre. If you fail to do so, you are at risk of losing your Student visa.

Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at the University of Huddersfield.

The specific aims are:

  • To develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related skills required for successful study at Higher Education level. These include the processes and conventions of academic writing, effective reading strategies, effective participation and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures.
  • To develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language so as to enable students to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence.
  • To support students in reflecting on their learning and identifying how to improve their skills and language.
  • To ensure students are able to meet the requirements of the UKVI and Huddersfield University through demonstrating a minimum English language level of CEFR B2 in the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking.

In this module, students will learn important academic reading and research skills may not have been part of their previous studies. These skills are necessary for their progression into a master's degree programme, as well as within a variety of professional contexts. This module will enable students to develop and enhance the necessary academic reading, research, communication and group work skills to progress with confidence to their desired postgraduate programme.

Programmers write using high-level programming languages because these languages are easier to understand and less complex than machine code. High-level languages also have the advantage to create user-friendly software programmes with codes that are easier to read, write and maintain. This is a beginner module to learning a high-level programming language where students will first be introduced to procedural programming. Students will then be learning some intermediate concepts such as data structures and files. In addition to procedural programming, the module will also cover an object-oriented programming approach and related topics on unit testing and debugging.

This module will provide students with an introduction to languages, applications and programming used for the design, implementation and maintenance of a web-based relational database. The practical elements of this module will equip students with the technical skills to design a relational database, use SQL to create and manipulate the database and interface a web server with a relational database. An introductory understanding of data warehousing and data mining will also be covered.
