An international student’s experience: Studying in the the UK

Huddersfield train station in the UK

Hi! I’m Khijra, a student from India, and in this blog I am sharing my experience at the University of Huddersfield International Study Centre and the UK in general. I’m an International Foundation Year student and my programme is Health and Human Science. I arrived in the UK in October 2019. If you are interested in knowing more about Huddersfield and my experience as an international student, read on…

Life outside the University

There is so much more to explore in the town of Huddersfield. The University is situated in the centre of the town and all the attractions such as art galleries, Castle Hill, Greenhead Park, Huddersfield Town Football Club and many other places of interest are nearby.

The train station, bus station and grocery stores are also walking distance from the University.

Major cities like Leeds and Manchester are just 20-30 minutes away by train. Huddersfield Art Gallery is five minutes’ walk away from the University for all the art lovers. If you are a shopping person, you should definitely check out Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

Hanging out with friends in Huddersfield is my favourite way to have a good time. If you want to go out with your friends and eat you have endless options like McDonald’s, KFC, Pizza Hut, Dominos. There are also many Indian restaurants and dessert places, and cafés like Costa and Starbucks to have a warm cup of coffee and have a good time— who needs a special occasion to eat.

Was coming to the UK worth it?

It was 100% the right decision to come to the UK. I’ve learnt so much and I’m still exploring things as much as I can. Coming here has taught me to become independent and has given me a sense of responsibility, which is moulding me slowly into an adult. There is so much to learn every day and explore; every new day is a new beginning. There are so many opportunities outside of your studies for you to prove yourself if you work hard for it.

The things that I have learnt after coming here are:

  • Be open minded.
  • Be resilient.
  • It’s sometimes hard, but things get better as I get better.
  • Everybody is in the same boat as me even though everyone is different.
  • Friendship is something that stays forever.
  • Always socialise and engage yourself with something productive.
  • To manage time smartly.

I’m even more exited and looking forward to spending the coming years at the University and exploring as much as I can. Whatever it is that you want to study, Huddersfield can never be a bad idea.
